Ice Maker Maintenance Tips

Ice machines are featured on increasingly more refrigerator models at all price levels. However, it’s important to remember that like the rest of your refrigerator, regular maintenance is key to how well the maker works, the overall quality of the ice it produces and reducing the chance you’ll need to pay for a freezer repair later in the life of your appliance.

Change the Filter

One of the most important appliance maintenance tips for your ice maker is changing the water filter once every six months to a year, depending on the frequency of use and your refrigerator model. This step helps keep your ice tasting fresh, as well as reduces issues with calcium carbonate deposits. Many refrigerators have an added feature that reminds you when it’s time to replace the filter.

Alternate Cubed and Crushed

It’s not uncommon for frost to block ice dispenser passages. One way to help prevent this from happening is to alternate between crushed and cubed ice each time you use the maker. You can also manually clean off any frost that accumulates.

Freezer Temperature

Keep your freezer temperature above -4ºF and below 0ºF to prevent frozen buildup on the ice machine tubing or the feeler arm.

Ice Lever

If your fridge has an ice lever, make sure you gently press your glass against it. Jamming the lever repeatedly increases the risks that you’ll start developing a lever that either sticks or that will not release at all.

Freezer Space

Another way to help reduce problems with your ice machine is to control how many items you store in your freezer, especially with older models. The more items in your freezer, the greater the chance that one of the freezer sensors that tell the maker when to make ice will malfunction. This will also help with your general freezer operation.

Cleaning your ice dispenser is another important aspect of refrigerator maintenance. Start by emptying out your ice storage container monthly to remove any blocks of ice at the bottom of the container. Follow your refrigerator model’s instructions for proper cleaning frequencies and methods as they may vary depending on your fridge.

Still having problems?

If you experience problems with your maker, it’s important to contact an experienced appliance repair or refrigerator repair company. This will ensure not only that your fridge is repaired correctly, but that you’ll have guaranteed fresh and clear ice when you need it.
